चंद राजाओं के वंशज बालोकल्याण चंद ने 1563 ईसवी में अल्मोड़ा को यूं ही कुमाऊं की राजधानी नहीं बनाया। इसके पीछे यहां के पौराणिक महत्व को देखते हुए यह निर्णय लिया होगा। अल्मोड़ा नगर की महत्ता, विशिष्टता का अंदाजा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि यह नगर नवदुर्गा व अष्ट भैरवों की छत्र छाया में अपने स्थापना काल से ही रहा है।
एक नगर में अष्ट भैरव, नवदुर्गा के मंदिर बिरले ही देखने को मिलते हैं। इसीलिए अल्मोड़ा को अपने विशिष्ट सांस्कृतिक, अध्यात्मिक व ऐतिहासिक महत्व के लिए जाना जाता है। कहा जाता है कि जहां भैरव विराजमान होते हैं वहां अनिष्ट, दु:ख दरिद्रता की छाया निकट नहीं आती। यहां तो अष्ट भैरव विराजमान हैं, जिसके कारण अल्मोड़ा नगरी प्रदेश, देश ही नहीं अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंच में अपना विशिष्ट स्थान रखती है। इसे लोग अष्ट भैरव व नवदुर्गा का ही आशीर्वाद मानते हैं।
यहां हम अल्मोड़ा नगर के अष्ट भैरवों का जिक्र कर रहे हैं। अष्ट भैरवों के नाम में लोकबोली का अपना पूरा प्रभाव है। यही कारण है कि स्थानीय बोली भाषा के आधार पर अष्ट भैरवों के नाम प्रचलित हैं। नगरवासी भैरवों को अपना ईष्टदेव मानते हैं। नगर के उत्तर दिशा में प्रवेश द्वार पर खुटकुणी भैरव का ऐतिहासिक मंदिर है। जाखनदेवी के समीप भैरव का मंदिर है, जो अष्ट भैरव में एक है। इसी प्रकार लाला बाजार के पास शै भैरव मंदिर है। जिसका निर्माण चंदवंशीय राजा उद्योत चंद ने कराया था।
बद्रेश्वर मंदिर से पूरब की ओर अष्ट भैरवों में एक भैरव शंकर भैरव के नाम से आसीन हैं। थपलिया मोहल्ले में गौड़ भैरव का मंदिर स्थापित है। चौघानपाटा के समीप अष्ट भैरवों में एक मंदिर बाल भैरव का है। यह मंदिर भी चंद राजाओं के काल का बताया जाता है। पल्टन फील्ड के पास गढ़ी भैरव विराजमान हैं, जो दक्षिण दिशा के प्रवेश द्वार पर रक्षा के लिए स्थापित किए गए हैं। पल्टन बाजार में ही अष्ट भैरवों में बटुक भैरव का मंदिर बना है। रघुनाथ मंदिर के समीप तत्कालीन राजमहल के दक्षिण की ओर काल भैरव मंदिर स्थापित है। इसी क्रम में बिष्टाकुड़ा के समीप अष्ट भैरव में एक प्राचीन भैरव मंदिर की स्थापना भी चंदवंशीय राजाओं के काल की मानी जाती है। एडम्स इंटर कालेज के समीप भी एक भैरव मंदिर है। इसे भी अष्ट भैरवों में एक बाल भैरव नाम से उच्चारित किया जाता है।
यूं तो पूरे नगर में भगवान भैरव के 10 मंदिर विभिन्न स्थानों में हैं। कुछ बुजुर्गों का कहना है कि दो मंदिर निजी तौर पर बनाए गए हैं। यूं तो भैरव मंदिर में दु:खों के निवारण, अनिष्ट का हरण करने की कामना से लोग रोज मत्था टेकने जाते हैं। लेकिन शनिवार को भैरव मंदिरों में खासी भीड़ रहती है।
